Yeagle was in Austin a few weeks back, flowing Texas trails on the daily. Now he’s back in Pittsburgh stacking dirt at Hazelwood whenever Mother Nature allows. Another Austin trip is already on the horizon for Brian. He wrote a little trip recap with some photos that you can check out after the break.

“It was as if I bought a flight to spring, exiting the airport into temperatures congenial to my body and spirit. Cold weather does have sedentary effect that I do appreciate for a time but it can quickly become oppressive. The warmer climate was welcome and our first destination I feel an affinity for, the woods. The number of people at Eastside Trails was inspiring, I also felt a bit covetous reflecting on how the Pittsburgh scene compares. There were a few days when the count was around twenty! The circumstances are obvious enabling Austin to fostered gatherings of this size. It’s important to be cognizant of the differences and just in my comparison with the situation at home. Although these numbers can erect lips and landings in much a shorter time, some direction is lost and also the likelihood of the woods being as a quiet a place as it has been, something I find much value in. Maybe I am content with fewer stalwarts in light of how that limits and affords certain benefits.

One of my first occupations was assisting in the creation of an external support for a landing that recently collapsed. The project was to stack beams log-cabin style around the failed corner to give lasting support. Wielding the chainsaw Patrick searched the area for any suitable trees as Matty ascended to trail foreman to shape the execution. After three days of cutting and stacking logs the landing was ready to be recapped, buttered, and rode in. Most of my time was spent at the trails, one third of it digging and the rest on the bike. Each day at the trails concluded with beers, cheeb, and conversation. Wood was placed on the coals of last night’s fire rekindling the blaze. Most of what was uttered was desultory statements evoking laughter or an affirmation of some common knowledge. Tony C. brought a comedy to the table explaining accusations he received after a night of ‘mods in the dark’ (Clint’s euphemism) blaming him for the transmission of gonorrhea. In giving some credence to her tale he looked up so images to identify the disease and concluded that there was no similarity as to what he saw on the screen and his own person. The health clinic was chosen as the final arbiter. A quick drop of the pants, a few tests and Tony receives a good report. Soon after the accuser also confesses having been subject to a yeast infection and thus Tony is absolved.

My fastidious personality often blossoms while riding. The terrain becomes the scapegoat, receiving my errors projected upon it. My failure to pull up enough becomes a jump that too short. Realizing this, I have much more to speak highly of at Eastside than not, the place is a blast. Speedball is the superlative line as a whole and the left hip at the end is a touchstone of lofty jumps. Branches that appear well out of reach would receive contact each time you caught decent backside before descending the hill into the hip. Matty has king roast on that jump and he is also the only person who I’ve seen foot-plant land the set repetitively. In his position I probably would have ejected.

Other frequented spots were thrift stores, bookstores, Empire bike shop (ping pong and skate sesh) and Castle Hill fitness center where Clint’s better half Jaime would supply us with soup and smoothies. The T1 ramp was visited a few times as warm-up spot before the trails. It is a great privilege to ride there, much gratitude to Joe and Ryan for allowing it and making it happen. Much thanks goes to Stew for having vacancy at the orphanage for other transients and me.” — Brian Yeagle
