15-In-15 With Jesse Whaley

Interview and photo by Shad Johnson/Goods BMX
Tell me about your hometown: Prineville Oregon? Priveville is a town of 8,000 in the middle of the Oregon desert. It’s full of real cowboys, rednecks, my family, and some of my very best friends. I love it there in the summer. Going back to visit is one of my favorite things, just chillin’ on the boat with my brother and friends.
Is it true you used to have dreadlocks and a goatee with beads in it? Yep.
What is your infatuation with Troy McMurray? It’s not an infatuation; Gonz and McMurray were my favorite riders growing up. They’re f*cking sick!
What’s up with your Warpig rebuild then? I always wanted one, so when I heard that Roman had one that he wanted to sell, I was all over it. I’ve been slowly collecting all of the parts. It’s almost done now, thanks to Barny, Shad, and Robbie. I can’t wait to shred that thing.
So I heard you’re leaving the Northwest? Yep, headed south to get some sun. My girl just graduated college, so we’re making a change and headed to Santa Monica for a bit.
What do you think will be the pros and cons of Cali??? No idea; we’ll see when we get there. I know I hate driving, so that’s one.
What will you miss most up here? My friends, my job a little, being driving distance from my family, and just living in the middle of a small city.
Tell me about your El Camino? It’s a ’79. I just finished replacing the transmission and redoing the brakes this weekend. It was the car that I always wanted, but it’s out of my system now. I put it up for sale, and am saving for my next dream car.
Why is it that you have to change the setup on your bike like every two weeks? Ha-ha! I don’t know, man. A.D.D., I guess. I get bored and change something. It’s fun. My bike is a toy to me, and changing it up is all part of the fun of BMX.
Tell me a good Lil’ Andrew story! The first day I met Andrew he bar-spun a three stair and then broke out a little pipe and asked if I wanted to smoke. This wouldn’t have been that unordinary, except he was 10. Ha-ha!
What’s your favorite three parks in the Portland area, and why? Westlinn, because it’s a masterpiece. St. Johns, ’cause it’s always empty. Beverton to shred and kick it with all the skate rats.
What are your three favorite tricks? Ice grinds, hangovers, and feeble 180′s.
What’s up with you always getting tickets riding your bike? I don’t know, I guess I look like a hoodlum, but a hoodlum that can afford to pay. I live downtown so I’m always riding from one place to the next. I think if you’re down there enough they just start picking on you.
What is the total in tickets you have received? Over a $1000 in the last year.
How stoked are you on your Verde? Super stoked!
